2009 was a year of challenges, rewards and discovery. Starting a new business presents enormous challenges for the stake holders. Business plans, finance approvals, site selection, fit-out requirements and negotiations, council approvals and all manner of business start-up adventures. All this before you have even opened the doors to your first customer. Small business ownership is certainly not for everyone.
Not long after opening, we were encouraged by both the local tourism association and chamber of commerce to enter into their annual awards. The application process is detailed and tedious and whether intentionally or not, presents a barrier to entry for many business owners. However the work done proved worthwhile as we were selected as finalists by both associations.
Whilst being pipped at the post in the tourism awards, we managed to take out the Chamber of Commerce award, much to our delight.
Now I have a taste for winning awards - watch this space for a 2010 addition!
